Lesnes Abbey Woods

Following the fantastic news that much-loved London park Lesnes Abbey Woods received investment of up to £3.4 million, Creative Junction worked with communities on the ‘Masterplan Design Programme’.

Through funding secured by The London Borough of Bexley from the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Big Lottery Fund, Lesnes Abbey Woods has benefited from improved access and facilities. Our programme, designed to share and inform these improvements, included Discovery Days, Ideas & Inspiration workshops and a final Sharing Showcase.

All our work enabled communities to explore the local heritage, generate ideas, be inspired by and inspire the landscape architects Mei Loci as they designed and delivered a variety of onsite improvements from gateways to outdoor classrooms to Fossil Bed features.

The Discovery Days involved 200+ participants in arts-led onsite outdoor activities including poetry, natural clay modelling, mono printing and skyline sketching.

The Discovery Days were an opportunity for residents and visitors to:

  • be inspired by the heritage of Lesnes Abbey Woods and get creative with words and pictures
  • explore the park and discover amazing things about Lesnes you never knew!
  • find out more about the improvements and plans for Lesnes Abbey Woods
  • work with landscape architects ‘Mei Loci’ to inform and influence how your park looks and feels

The Ideas & Inspiration workshops focused on a particular design feature of Lesnes Abbey Woods that are being improved e.g. improved Gateways – and for communities to generate ideas, be inspired by and inspire the designs of the landscape architects Mei Loci who are supporting Bexley in transforming Lesnes Abbey Woods.

The Sharing Showcase was the final part of this programme – an informal drop in twilight event to share and show the final designs from landscape architects Mei Loci and see how they have directly been inspired, informed and influenced by community ideas.

Creative Junction also worked with over 250 people to get creative, contribute to and shape ideas for the London Borough of Bexley Heritage Lottery Fund bid for the transformation of Lesnes Abbey Woods. We designed and delivered the Branding and Communications consultation for Your Park, Your Say, working with five different community groups to create a range of proposed logos, straplines and visual identity.

This work saw groups involved in site visits tailored to each group to explore Lesnes Abbey Woods and to gather and create aural, oral, written and visual stimuli. We provided cameras and other materials to capture stimulus from the amazing human and natural history of the park. These provided inspiration for creative ‘visioning’ workshops including photography, creative writing and 2D/3D art to produce ideas to inform the Branding and Communications for Lesnes Abbey Woods.

On the basis of consultations with stakeholder participants, Creative Junction determined and created 9 design concepts resulting in the completion of 6 logo, strapline and branding options.

Additionally we facilitated working groups within the London Borough of Bexley and worked with other consultation areas to support the Masterplan.

We developed ideas, designed panels and curated two exhibitions for a roadshow for wider community and stakeholder consultation; the Masterplan exhibition and the Your Park, Your Say exhibition showcasing all the work with 1000+ community participants.
