And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.” Roald Dahl
These final words of the internationally loved children’s author sung in the ears of the children, artists and staff as they completed a unique family learning and museum project. The collaboration between Creative Junction, Slough Borough Council and the Roald Dahl Museum and Storytelling Centre, involved looked-after children, two artists, heaps of pencils and paper, and the splendiferous inspiration of Dahl.
The six fantabulous days included getting to know one another and the life of Dahl through VIP trips to the Museum. The children, their carers and the participation team at Slough Borough Council worked closely with a theatre practitioner and published children’s illustrator to develop their own characters and producing paintings of their characters.
Everyone returned to the Museum at the end of the project to perform and present their collection of limited edition paintings to the public, exhibited at the Museum over the summer holiday. The self-named ‘Scooperfastic Band’ were joined by the Commissioner for Children’s Services from Slough Borough Council who requested for the pieces to be hung permanently at the Council’s main offices. Each child also kept their original pieces and received a published book documenting the process and work.
