Creative Junction designed a project to support emotional wellbeing and mental health amongst children and their caregivers, identified as experiencing low self-esteem and at risk of poor emotional health.
This early intervention action research project uses storytelling and multidisciplinary art forms (including movement, storymaking and craft) to:
- raise the children’s self-esteem and confidence, sense of self-worth and achievement and social skills
- support children/ families to think about themselves and their place in the world through exploring fictional characters
- ensure everyone can participate in arts engagement, self-expression, creation of something special to share and to take home
We are working with children aged 2-7 at Lent Rise Primary School and Slough Childrens Centres.
Activity inspired by Julia Donaldson’s story ‘The Smartest Giant in Town’ has included painting sails, shop role play, building mouse houses and dancing emotions.
Together with exploring feeling faces, this project is aimed at increasing emotional and social wellbeing among children and involved family members; developing self esteem and confidence, whilst also promoting a love of reading by bringing stories to life.
Supported by Artswork, Thames Valley Housing and the Slough Cultural Educational Partnership.
CPD is offered to all adults involved in the delivery of the project and library staff, to stimulate new ideas, cascade skills and increase capacity in the arts offer to children in these settings.
The project includes a visit to the Story Museum in Oxford; and unusual museum which celebrates story in all forms, believing that stories lie at the heart of culture and help us to develop the vital language, imaginative and emotive skills we need to understand the world and connect with each other.
All of the outputs and outcomes will be shared through an end of project celebration with care givers, families, staff and support networks and the wider community. Children will take pride in sharing and showcasing their work and lead in engaging visitors in have a go activity from the project.
