Working with Reading Borough Council

Creative Junction and Reading Borough Council’s Culture and Sport Development Service are working in partnership with local SureStart Children’s Centres to deliver two creative learning programmes to engage parents/carers and families with children aged 0-5 years.

One part of the programme will involve working with a parent/carers group enabling them to learn new skills, increase confidence and ensure that they have the information they need to support their children’s emotional and intellectual development.  Through the programme, opportunities will be offered for participants to try and experiment with a range of techniques in crafts (predominantly), visual arts and possibly new media.

The second strand of the programme will involve working to engage parents/carers and children aged 0-5 years in learning together, by offering informal activities in a fun, stimulating and safe environment. Using the mediums of dance, movement and drama, the programme will be specifically designed to involve the adult and young person working together, with the adult being an integral part of the activities in an effort to increase shared learning, understanding and enjoyment.

Aims of the programme:

  • To create a creative environment in the centres that encourages experimentation, confidence building and shared learning.
  • To develop a record of learning for both staff and families as a reflection/celebration of their participation.
  • To provide relevant learning opportunities and ensure information is available for staff /volunteers/families involved with the programmes.
  • Provide activities that adults/carers can take part in and learn/develop from to pass onto their children/families.
  • Provide activities that adults take part in with their children and learn from.
  • Ensure that the sessions develop creativity.
  • To inspire adults/carers/families to continue with these skills and their own learning both within the centre and the home environments.
