SEGRO Young Artists 2011

Inspire   Develop   Celebrate

SEGRO the pan-European property development and investment company have commissioned Slough based social enterprise Creative Junction to lead on a programme of partnerships between SEGRO, schools and artists to inspire young people, develop talent and celebrate art. This Arts & Business South East Community Partnership award winning programme is now in its fourth year.

The SEGRO Young Artists 2011 programme is enabling 6 partnership schools from Hounslow, Ealing, Enfield, Brent, Slough and Reading to work with professional visual artists to create artwork for business settings, through exploring the theme ‘The World of Work’.

The programme was launched on the 19th October 2011 at one of the SEGRO buildings in Slough Trading Estate. During the event, students, teachers and artists had an opportunity to start planning their projects, which will take place in the schools over 5 days from November 2011 to January 2012. The artists will work in partnership with young people and teaching staff and will also support the schools in preparing and setting up a selection of the artwork for an exhibition on the 7th February 2012 at the Royal Society of Arts, London, where selected pieces will be purchased and sited in SEGRO offices across the UK.

This year the programme is welcoming again the internationally-celebrated artist Jane McAdam Freud as the SEGRO Young Artists programme’s patron for 2011. Jane is a multi disciplinary artist with her work encompassing drawing, sculpture and film. She is the daughter of artist Lucien Freud and the great granddaughter of Sigmund Freud. www.janemcadamfreud.com

SEGRO Young Artists 2011 at Cranbury College - Reading

In previous years, the SEGRO Young Artists Programme has seen young people develop inspiration from working in partnership with their teachers and practising artists. It has given students the confidence and interest to investigate, ask questions and find out more. They have gained a greater breadth of experience, new thought processes and new skills for making artwork and solving visual problems. They have also developed a better understanding of teamwork and collaborative learning and a greater awareness of future opportunities and careers in the world of work.

‘‘The project has taken us out of our comfort zone and has introduced us to new techniques. We were given more challenge and instead of being told what to do, had to work more things out for ourselves’’.  Student Westgate School

“On the surface, SEGRO Young Artists provides an opportunity for young people to realise their creative potential but, in reality, the advantages of the programme are so much broader. Inspiring young people to develop a piece of work that means something to them energises their engagement with the school environment at a key stage in their development and delivers a motivational boost that can benefit all aspects of their education.” Ian Coull, Chief Executive, SEGRO plc
