Cranbury College – Reading

SEGRO Young Artists 2011 at Cranbury College - Reading

Cranbury College works with disaffected young people who are out of school for a wide variety of reasons and caters for key stage 1-4

These young people find learning difficult and stressful in a normal school environment.

The intention was to build confidence and self-esteem within the young people in order to encourage their interest in the world of work and develop new skills and approaches to artwork:

Artist Patrick Altes and Teacher Suzy Liew created an innovative artistic programme allowing students to explore and express their ideas around the theme of the World of Work through an ongoing creative process exploring the media of drawing, painting, photography and installation.

It allowed the students to reflect about work and work related issues in a way they had not before.

It also allowed them to work collectively around the project as well as define how it was going to evolve. They first engaged with some experimental work, which allowed them to feel free from the constraints of representational work.

This work helped them engage with the notion of drawing but also captured their imagination and they engaged extremely well with the activities and the final outcome of an exhibition at the Royal Art Society, which for them was quite an incredible thing.
