Arts Award 7 to 11 pilot

Creative Junction were selected to work with Trinity College London in association with Arts Council England over 2011 to pilot two new levels of Arts Award designed specifically for the 7-11 age range: Arts Award Discover and Arts Award Explore.

The two new levels can be delivered through schools, arts and cultural organisations and other children’s settings. They provide clear progression routes for those wishing to complete the Bronze Arts Award, a Level 1 qualification open to young people from age 11.

Ten pilot trainers were selected nationally from the existing Arts Award trainer’s panel to deliver the Arts Award 7-11. Creative Junction’s Bronze and Silver Arts Award trainer Gloria Garcia has been selected as a pilot trainer for the South East area. The role is focused to two specific areas: training and documentation.

Once pilot activity is complete (by October 2011), Arts Award evaluated the content and structure of the new levels before they are launched in early 2012.

Creative Junction carried out some documentation visits from July to September 2011.. The centres visited piloted the 2 new levels, Arts Award Discover, aimed at 7 to 9 year olds and Arts Award Explore, aimed at 9 to 11.

Creative Junction visited 2 summer school projects and 1 project delivered during the curricular time. These are some of the comments from the pilot advisers:

“It has been fantastic to see how the pupils have individually explored their art and as part of a group whilst being part of the Arts Award pilot group” –Arts Award pilot adviser, teacher at Claire’s Court School, Maidenhead

“The greatest thing was to see children in the school holiday trying so hard. One child said “I hate school but I love this, why can’t school be like this?”. Arts Award allows them to join education in a fun way. It offered the framework needed. I’ve really enjoyed the freedom the Arts Award offers within a structure”- Arts Award pilor adviser, teacher at Sherbourne House School, Chandler’s Ford

After a successful national pilot, the Arts Award National Team are busy putting everything in place to ensure Arts Award reaches as many children and young people aged 7 upwards as possible. Read about the development and recommendations in our summary report
